History: Wiki link 1, Wiki link 2
Personality:
Matt is your stereotypical high school kid. And like your stereotypical high school kid, he's on his phone all the time. Like, all the time. He's not quite a loner, but not quite the popular kid. He's not a druggie, but he gets high from time to time. He attends parties but still has the time to drive his bullied cousin to school every day. He won't be in the school talent show, but he'll attend it when his friends are in it. He's a good, dependable friend to Steve and Andrew, except he'll occasionally ignore them if it means spending more time with his crush/girlfriend, Casey. He likes to play pranks and games, especially once he gets his powers, but at the same time he's adamant about having rules to prevent them from using their powers to hurt people, or using them in public where they could be caught.

By the end of the movie, Matt's life has gotten much more serious. Steve died, and even though Andrew wouldn't admit to it, it was Andrew's fault. Though Matt and Andrew were close as kids, they grew apart in high school and it wasn't until they got their powers that they started hanging out together again. After Steve's death, though, they really drift apart. Matt spends more time with Casey and almost no time at all with Andrew, ignoring his powers as much as he can, except to once fly to Andrew's house and argue with him over his behavior. Then, when Andrew has his huge meltdown at the end of the movie, Matt is forced to kill him in order to save the lives of all the people around them in downtown Seattle. He is made to realize the old adage "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" in the hardest, most emotionally conflicted way possible.

After killing Andrew, he flew away from the cops and, by extension, from his old life forever. Meaning he never graduated high school, never got to explain to Casey or his family what had happened, never got to see any of them again. He traveled the world for three months before ending up in Tibet, where he said his own goodbye to Andrew, forgiving him for all the wrong he'd done, saying, "I just wanted to say that... I'm sorry and, uh, I... I hope... that you know that I did what I had to do. You're not a bad person. I know that. That's all that matters." He swore he'd use his powers for good, and that he'd try to find out more about the mysterious crystal that gave them their powers, though whether he ever will is yet to be seen.

Matt is more intellectual than he seems, constantly quoting philosophers or authors of books he's read. He introduces Andrew to the idea of hubris (though it mostly falls on deaf ears). He isn't going to be valedictorian or anything, because he cares more about socializing than studying, but he cares about the world and his place in it. He watches Casey's blog mostly because he has a crush on her, but after hearing about the plight of people in the Central African Republic, he decides to donate money to Casey's cause. After the movie, he decides to use his powers to help people, a thing that never really occurred to him before Andrew lost it, but that isn't too far-fetched an idea given his personality.

Matt is shown to be more monetarily well off than Andrew is. That's not to say his family's rich, like whoever's mansion the talent show after party is at is, but he has a car (albeit kind of a shitty one), and can buy Andrew a new camera (which Andrew's dad claims is $500, but that could be hyperbole). Plus he has enough extra cash to donate some to Casey's charity. This is especially in contrast to how poor Andrew's family is shown to be, since his dad is out of work and his mom's cancer meds take up most of the income. This affects Matt's personality in that he doesn't particularly think about money or the cost of things. After the final showdown with Andrew, he's cut off from his parents' money, so he probably has to steal things rather than pay for them himself, which he'd feel some guilt over. He has a strong moral sense of right and wrong, shown when he calls the police after Andrew forces the motorist off the road, and when he sacrifices Andrew to save the innocent people around him.

Items on your character at canon point: A big backpack full of hiking gear and extra (warm) clothes.
Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses: Matt has telekinesis, meaning he can move and affect things with his mind. This is extended to mean that he can move himself through the air to fly, and he can form a sort of force field around his body so he can't be hit, stabbed, etc. In addition, Matt, Andrew, and Steve share a sort of psychic link. When one of them (in the movie, it's always Andrew) is in trouble, the others hear a noise in their head and, in Matt's case, get a nosebleed. They can also seem to find where the others are (or at least Steve can, in the movie).

In terms of weaknesses, Matt isn't as good at using his powers as Andrew or even Steve are. He likens the telekinesis to a muscle that has to be stretched before being used. As the boys practice, they get better and better at using it. Perhaps because Matt doesn't use his powers as much as Andrew or Steve, he's not as good at using them. He gets more nosebleeds than the others do, and is easily overpowered by Andrew multiple times in the film (notably when he tries to punch Andrew and Andrew stops his fist in midair). He still has to gesture with his hands to move things whereas Andrew can move things just by thinking about it.

Prose Log Sample:
Time seemed to slow down for Matt as he watched Andrew-- or he guessed now it was just Andrew's body-- hang lifeless on the spear impaling him. In the back of his mind, a part of Matt wondered whether there's anything of you left after you die, any shred of a soul or sense of being, or whether when the neurons stop firing, you're just a dead hunk of meat in clothes. Is there an afterlife? Will Andrew go to heaven now? Or hell, maybe, for what he's done. But Andrew isn't-- wasn't a bad person. He just needed help, but wouldn't let anyone get close enough to help him. If only there had been another way...

Then the sound of sirens and voices and guns cocking floods back in and Matt remembers where he is. And that is lying on the ground in the middle of a square surrounded by SWAT teams and crumbling buildings. He's going to be arrested, or worse, shot if he doesn't leave now. As much as he hates the idea of running from the cops, he knows they wouldn't understand. How could they? They weren't there in the cave at the party with him, Andrew, and Steve. They don't know what they've been through, why Andrew did the things he did. Even Matt isn't sure about that last part, and he's the closest thing Andrew had to a friend. To family.

He opens his eyes. He wants to look around, hoping he'd see Casey in the crowd but knowing she's not going to be anywhere in sight. She's safe, hopefully, back where he left her, by the Space Needle. He sighs. She deserves better than this. She deserves an explanation, one that he's never going to be able to give. Instead, he gets to his feet and takes off flying. He has to get away, that much he knows. One of them has to stay alive. For Andrew's sake. For Steve's.

He doesn't know where he'll go. Somewhere far away, that much is for sure. He doesn't have much choice.

But in some ways, choice is all he has right now. What to do, where to go. All that is left to be decided.
